Trump right again: The statue destroyers don’t know what they are doing

This photo provided by WROC-TV shows the remnants of a Frederick Douglass statue ripped from its base at a park in Rochester, N.Y., Sunday, July 5, 2020. On Friday night, President Trump delivered his brilliant and history-making speech at Mount Rushmore in defense of Western Civilization.

Among the many memorable lines were these:

“Our nation is witnessing a merciless campaign to wipe out our history, defame our heroes, erase our values, and indoctrinate our children. Angry mobs are trying to tear down statues of our Founders, deface our most sacred memorials, and unleash a wave of violent crime in our cities.  Many of these people have no idea why they are doing this …”

It didn’t take long to prove that last sentence frighteningly true.

Two days later, on July 5, vandals attacked and destroyed a statue of Frederick Douglass in Rochester, New York. Yes, that Frederick Douglass — the freed slave and noted abolitionist who spent his entire life fighting for the rights of black people.

Whether by design or mere stupidity, the vandals destroyed the statue of Douglass on the anniversary of the orator’s most famous speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July,” which he delivered in Rochester in 1852 to explain that independence from Britain meant nothing to black Americans who were forced to live in slavery.

“Your high independence only reveals the immeasurable distance between us. The blessings in which you, this day, rejoice, are not enjoyed in common. This Fourth July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn,” Douglass said.

Yet Douglass found solace in the spirit of independence and in the words of the Founders:

“Now, take the Constitution according to its plain reading, and I defy the presentation of a single pro-slavery clause in it. On the other hand it will be found to contain principles and purposes, entirely hostile to the existence of slavery,” Douglass wrote.

What kind of people could destroy a monument to such a man? But more to the point, why do we seek to destroy any monuments that are but markers of the progress of mankind as we make our way toward truth?

Clearly, the radicals who would rip out our past cannot be entrusted with our future. That is why President Trump’s words are so important:

“Make no mistake: this left-wing cultural revolution is designed to overthrow the American Revolution.  In so doing, they would destroy the very civilization that rescued billions from poverty, disease, violence, and hunger, and that lifted humanity to new heights of achievement, discovery, and progress. To make this possible, they are determined to tear down every statue, symbol, and memory of our national heritage. …

“My fellow Americans, it is time to speak up loudly and strongly and powerfully and defend the integrity of our country.

“It is time for our politicians to summon the bravery and determination of our American ancestors.  It is time. It is time to plant our flag and protect the greatest of this nation, for citizens of every race, in every city, and every part of this glorious land.  For the sake of our honor, for the sake of our children, for the sake of our union, we must protect and preserve our history, our heritage, and our great heroes. ”

Let us hope that the president’s words inspire millions of Americans to come to the aid of their country. It’s now or never.

  1. Sadly, due to poor, public “screwal” education or bad parenting, the statue destroyers ARE ignorant & continue doing it because there has not been enough public outcry against it. Due to Fear? People, this is NOT a time for silence but for COURAGE. We have only a brief time on this earth. We can’t depend on others to do our fighting for us. We MUST find OUR inner strength, own it & use it creatively to protect and defend our history as an evolving nation. What have we got to lose? PLENTY!!

    1. Nancy McGunagle’s reply is perfect. Frank Miele brings us right to the heart of the issues and I’m glad readers recognize this. The looters and anarchists are uneducated people who do not contribute to making our current society better. They are lazy cowards telling each other how brave they are by anonymously breaking and entering and stealing from businesses. Not looting but out and out stealing. Their mother’s must be so proud. Uneducated cowards. Mob rule should be stopped. There is no moral and ethical reason to destroy everything in their wake because George Floyd died. That was just the excuse they needed to intimidate the residents. Just the excuse they needed to come out of the woodwork to take whatever they could rather than, God forbid, buy it. Ethics, morals, religion, conscience, are all conveniently gone. They think “they” were wronged. Ask anyone. Everyone could think they were wronged. It takes strength of character to get over that obstacle and move on to a productive life. But they would rather whimper and whine and enjoy being victims. Madness.
