Cruz sets hearing Tuesday to expose Antifa’s radical agenda; GOP must pay attention!

I am excited that Sen. Ted Cruz has scheduled a Senate Judiciary hearing Tuesday on the illegal tactics of Antifa in Portland and other cities.

The hearing will be held by the Subcommittee on the Constitution, and is pointedly titled as “The Right of the People Peaceably to Assemble: Protecting Speech by Stopping Anarchist Violence.”

I am hopeful that this hearing will address what I called “the New Rebellion Against the Constitution” in my Real Clear Politics column two weeks ago. I wrote then:

“The Constitution guarantees citizens of the United States certain civil rights, including the right of free speech and the right to peaceably assemble. Those rights are being impeded by the far-left mobs rioting in Portland, Seattle and other cities, as well as by the lawlessness that has been spawned in many urban areas by defunding or decommissioning police.”

To me, this is the winning issue for the November elections — if Republicans don’t get distracted by Democrat lies.

The hearing is scheduled to get started at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time. I’m eager to hear from journalist Andy Ngo who has dedicated (and risked!) his life in order to expose Antifa’s thuggish tactics used to silence the opposition. It will also be interesting to see Oregon’s two Democrat senators explain whether they support law and order in Portland.

Hopefully, President Trump will monitor this hearing and will take action against Antifa. He can do so now, using existing law as I wrote last week:

[D]epriving people of their civil rights has been a federal crime for well over a century, at least since the 14th Amendment was adopted in 1868. Moreover, Section 241 of U.S. Code Title 18, Chapter 13, makes it a crime for “two or more persons [to] conspire to injure, oppress, threaten, or intimidate any person in any State, Territory, Commonwealth, Possession, or District in the free exercise or enjoyment of any right or privilege secured to him by the Constitution or laws of the United States.”

It is about time for the Justice Department to recognize that the coordination of thousands of antifa and BLM rioters across multiple cities is indeed just such a conspiracy.
