At a September 10 press conference on coronavirus, the president had to put up with a slimy sleazy question from ABC’s Jonathan Karl, who is clearly trying to out-do Jim Acosta as the most pompous self-important Fake News reporter covering the White House.
Karl swallowed a lie told by Bob Woodward in his new book “Rage” and then blamed Trump for lying to the American public by downplaying the China virus when in fact Trump was the only one taking the virus seriously in January and February.
Woodward was too lazy to find out that it was no secret the virus was dangerous when he talked to Trump in February, nor that Trump had always approached the virus from the point of view of avoiding panic and yet simultaneously warning that it could always get worse. He was dealing with a shifting, dangerous situation and never misled anyone. If he had, you can bet that Drs. Fauci and Birx would not have tolerated it. Still, logic and facts did not prevent Karl from asking this presumptuous and rude question:
“Why did you lie to the American people and why should we trust what you have say now?”
As Trump said, Karl’s question was a disgrace and he should be ashamed of himself.
“That’s a terrible question and the phraseology — I didn’t lie. What I said was “we have to be calm. We can’t be panicked,” Trump responded. “If he (Woodward) thought that was a bad statement, he would have reported it. … And he didn’t report it because he didn’t think it was bad. Nobody thought it was bad.”
As Karl rudely challenged the president, Trump shushed him, and told him definitively:
“The way you phrased that is such a disgrace. It’s a disgrace to ABC television network. It’s a disgrace to your employer.”
The president explained to Karl that the flu is also a serious problem, but he used it as an example because it was something familiar to people, and it would discourage panic.
“It’s a serious problem,” Trump said of the China virus. “That doesn’t mean I’m going to jump up and down in the air and start saying ‘People are going to die, people are going to die!’ No!”
You can watch the entire exchange on my video. It’s obvious that Jonathan Karl is incapable of learning, but he should at least know how to treat the president with respect and proper decorum. Fat chance!
I’ve posted a video of part of the press conference on my YouTube page. (Hint: You can subscribe by clicking here!) It’s about a nine-minute video, so if you only want to see the Karl exchange here’s the timeline:
My commentary goes from the start of the video till 1:22. Karl’s accusation occurs at 1:26 and the president’s response continues until 6:06. A follow up question by Philip Rucker of the Washington Post (same paper as Bob Woodward) accuses the president of “not leveling” with the American public (same as lying by the way). He is not rude like Karl, but the premise of his question was just more Woodward book promotion.
