Abortion: A sickness of the spirit, a disease of the soul

The ability of virtually the entire modern world to convince itself that human babies have no innate value is surely evidence of a spiritual disease.

The latest symptom of that disease just surfaced this week when more than 2,000 aborted infant fetuses were found in the Illinois home of a deceased abortion doctor who had worked at a clinic in South Bend, Indiana, until he lost his license in 2015 for multiple violations of the law.

It is hard to imagine even the most dedicated proponent of abortion being able to condone this doctor surrounding himself with the blobs of what they deem to be meaningless flesh. It is truly an apt symbol of the eternal punishment that awaits this doctor and his fellow abortionists, and possibly it will awaken some souls to the darkness that surrounds us. Although the crime scene had yellow tape marked “Police Line Do Not Cross,” our entire country that condones abortion should be surrounded with a tape that reads “God’s Line Do Not Cross.”

At one time in the United States, abortion was legal in rare instances where the life of the mother was at risk or where the pregnancy was the result of rape or incest. In those cases, you could at least make the case that the value of the infant life was being measured against the value of the mother’s life or against the moral wrong of rape and incest.

But when abortion became a matter of “choice” and of “convenience,” that meant society had erased all value from the human life being carried by its mother — and by extension from all human life.

It is hard to fathom how a society can exist under such circumstances, and probably it cannot exist long. The closest example to this insanity in history may be the blind acceptance of human sacrifice in the early American societies of the Mayan and Aztec Indians. You can also cite the many cases of genocidal murder such as Nazi Germany, Rwanda and elsewhere, but those are usually not embedded in law and are either the result of dictatorial power or mob rule.

In the case of the abortion holocaust in the United States, the sanction for murder came from the Supreme Court, which is supposed to be the source of wise counsel and the protector of our rights. In other words, the spiritual rot started at the center and worked its way out so that now even supposed Christians accept infant murder as right and proper and even something to be celebrated.

I have written elsewhere about my own experience of “walking away” from the evil of abortion. That involved an abortion doctor displaying just one “baby in a bottle” to me and other supporters of women’s rights at a meeting of NOW in Kalispell back in the 1980s. It made me realize the huge chasm that existed between women’s rights and human rights, and that human rights always had to come first.

Hopefully, that lesson will be understood by many more people as a result of this latest story of the horrors of abortion that has come out of the Midwest. The bottom line is that if we don’t value human life in the womb, we don’t value human life — period.

  1. I served for twenty-eight years in the military where all took an oath to basically protect and defend the citizens of our country to our last breath. That oath meant all human life was to be protected, not certain classes of life, and especially, to protect those that were defenseless. I would imagine that all would agree that a fetus is defenseless against brutal outside forces and needs protection in order to survive. I never thought I would live to see the day that our citizen government would legalize the death of innocent and unborn future citizens upon demand and without just cause.

We have now lost more than 60 million of our sons, daughters, friends, and neighbors and we are a much poorer nation for it. Our score to date is ten times that of the Holocaust. I would rate this ugly tenor of the national discussion about legal abortion above any other since the Civil War; and, it has led us into an endless Faustian bargain that consumes much of our daily political debate. Many are asking, “How can this be in our Country?” RLS
