Democrats claim they want to protect the legitimacy of our elections, but at the same time they are doing everything in their power to de-legitimize them.
The latest example comes from New York State, where the Democratic Senate has passed legislation which would automatically register as voters all residents who obtain driver’s licenses through the New York Department of Motor Vehicles.
Gee, what harm could that do? Lots of states have similar “motor voter” laws, but this is different. That’s because New York State recently decided to give driver licenses to illegal aliens.
But surely New York would not allow illegal aliens to register to vote! Yes they would — because this new law will automatically register everyone UNLESS they opt out. In other words, illegal aliens would have to say on their application that they are here illegally and have no right to vote.
Duh! Why should they do anything to call attention to themselves? No doubt some of them want to vote illegally. Others probably have no idea what the application says or what they are signing because English is not their first language. Heck, in most cases, it’s not even their second language. They can’t read, write or speak English, yet we expect them to know what it means to “opt out” of voting?!?
Of course, the problem isn’t just illegal aliens either. A cosmopolitan state like New York has millions of legal resident aliens, too. They can’t vote either because they are not citizens, but this new law would allow them to get in the voter rolls unless they decided to opt out. As the Lord’s Prayer says, “Lead us not into temptation.”
There is a provision in the law that is supposed to override the “opt out” provision, but it just puts responsibility on the overworked bureaucrats to catch any voter cheats.
“Notwithstanding any other law to the contrary, no agency designated under this section shall transmit to the State Board of Elections any application for registration for a person that is, by virtue of data collected by the agency during the same application for services or change of address or name transaction, demonstrably ineligible to register or pre-register to vote by reason of age or not being a citizen of the United States.”
Of course, the current system isn’t much better. As John Nolte points out at Breitbart.com:
Currently in New York, American citizens only need a driver’s license to register to vote, and although applicants are required to swear that they are eligible to vote, state election officials have previously admitted that “it’s basically an honor system.”
Or as I like to say, it’s a system without honor.
