Mitt Romney comes out from under a rock

Just when you thought the Senate would be free of the grandstanding antics of moralist prigs like Jeff Flake, John McCain and Bob Corker, along comes the most self-righteous phony of them all — Mitt Romney.

About to be sworn in as Utah’s newest senator, failed presidential candidate and nearly human being Mitt Romney came out from under a rock and announced his presence in the Swamp by sliming President Trump on the first day of the new year.

In a hand-wringingly cloying op-ed written for the Washington Post, Romney explained like the would-be school-marm he is “How a President Shapes Public Character.” I cannot recall if I have ever read a more self-serving piece of advice, but if I have it was surely written by a guy named Jim Mattis. Maybe Mattis is working as a ghost writer for Romney now that he is out of a job.

I’ll be writing more about Romney in my next column for Real Clear Politics on Monday, but in the meantime here’s the opening paragraph from the pretend Republican who gave us Obamacare — and the second term of Obama.

The Trump presidency made a deep descent in December. The departures of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, the appointment of senior persons of lesser experience, the abandonment of allies who fight beside us, and the president’s thoughtless claim that America has long been a “sucker” in world affairs all defined his presidency down.

For now, let’s just say that if Sen. Romney doesn’t recognize a sucker when he sees one, it may be because he is one!

President Trump quickly responded on Twitter in humorous fashion:

Here we go with Mitt Romney, but so fast! Question will be, is he a Flake? I hope not. Would much prefer that Mitt focus on Border Security and so many other things where he can be helpful. I won big, and he didn’t. He should be happy for all Republicans. Be a TEAM player & WIN!

The president is giving Romney a chance to be a real Republican, but he needn’t have bothered. You can educate an ignorant man, but you can’t teach sense to a fool and as Proverbs 26 teaches us, you should not even try:

There is no good way to answer fools when they say something stupid. If you answer them, then you, too, will look like a fool. If you don’t answer them, they will think they are smart.

  1. I am a member of a conversation blog, Ricochet, and posted your URL and title of your web page this morning Frank. Hopefully many of the pro-Trump will come over. They have all their Never Trumps claiming that Romney was right in his letter, but I think he is an ass.

    1. Thanks Kay. I saw a couple of referrals from Ricochet.com. Thanks for the help. Hard to believe anyone supports a blowhard like Romney!

  2. I sat out the 2012 election because I couldn´t vote for Obama, and with the way I saw Romney cheating for electoral votes away from Ron Paul I couldn´t vote for him either. Do any of you remember during that time that Romney´s own nephew said he would never vote for him? I think his nephew must know him very well. i think Utah dems helped foist him on us to replace the fake republicans Flake and McCain and maybe Corker.
