Today, the impeachment circus introduces a new “bearded lady” to terrify the masses — this time a Never Trumper Army officer who will apparently testify that he was shocked — shocked, I tell you! — that President Trump asked Ukraine to look into corruption involving former Vice President Joe Biden.
Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a Ukraine expert on the National Security Council, is the first person to testify at the impeachment circus who actually listened to the July phone call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but that doesn’t mean his opinion of the call has any particular importance — since we ALREADY HAVE THE CALL TRANSCRIPT (!) and can judge it ourselves without benefit of a Deep State Never Trumper to serve as our guide!
Vindman’s six-page opening statement was mysteriously leaked (by Adam Schiff?) to the New York Times. What we learn is that if Vindman were president, he would not have cared about Ukraine’s role in interfering with the US presidential election of 2016 and would not have wanted to know whether Joe Biden had used his political power to quash an investigation into a corrupt company that had hired his son Hunter for mysterious (there’s that word again!) reasons.
In other words, Vindman thinks like a Democrat, probably is a Democrat, and wants to restore the corrupt practices of yesteryear to protect Democrats. Vindman is a Deep State toady who said he was concerned about “outside influencers promoting a false narrative of Ukraine inconsistent with the consensus views of the interagency.”
The “outside influencers” would include Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani, diplomats appointed by the Trump administration, and of course Trump himself! The “interagency” would be official jargon for the Deep State, the career bureaucrats and intelligence apparatchiks who think they — not the elected officials — run the government.
Vindman is a Ukranian-born American who clearly has dual loyalties. He seems more concerned about protecting the Ukraine than in advancing US policy. And at the very least, he has shown that in his mind he serves the “interagency” more than he serves the president. Regarding the president’s July phone call, Vindman said this:
“I was concerned by the call. I did not think it was proper to demand that a foreign government investigate a U.S. citizen, and I was worried about the implications for the U.S. government’s support of Ukraine.”
Of course, President Trump did not make any demands of Zelensky regarding an investigation or anything else, as the transcript shows. What the president did do is let the Ukrainians know that he and his administration will not tolerate corruption or election interference. Of course, that probably did not sit well with the “interagency,” since the CIA and the State Department specialize in election interference!
Moreover, Vindman admits that the reason he reported the call to his supervisors is because he was worried about the POLITICAL implications, not any illegality. Namely, he felt that if Ukraine delivered evidence against Biden or other Democrats, it would enrage congressional Democrats and they would shut off aid to the Ukraine.
“I realized that if Ukraine pursued an investigation into the Bidens and Burisma it would likely be interpreted as a partisan play which would undoubtedly result in Ukraine losing the bipartisan support it has thus far maintained.”
President Trump is correct that the call transcript vindicates him and that witnesses like Vindman are just afraid that Trump will expose their double-dealing. The president tweeted this today and dismissed Vindman as a guy “I never even heard of”:
“The Impeachment Hoax is a disgrace. Read the transcript! Why are people that I never even heard of testifying about the call,” he wrote.” Just READ THE CALL TRANSCRIPT AND THE IMPEACHMENT HOAX IS OVER!”
It is hard not to think of historical parallels to the impeachment hoax, starting with the Salem witch trials, but also including the Star Chamber, the Spanish Inquisition and Stalinist show trials.
What they all have in common is they start with a conclusion of guilt and then work backwards to fit the facts to their predetermined outcome.
President Trump is being persecuted because a variety of unelected bureaucrats and elected Democrats disagree with the nature of his presidency. That’s because he is governing as the Constitution expected — by acting in his role as chief executive to do what he thinks is right to lead the nation in policy and enforcement.
The impeachment mob with their torches of hatred and pitchforks of procedure are trying to do now what they could not do at the ballot box — prevent Trump from governing as he promised to do.
