Watching CNN react to President Trump’s forceful letter of protest to Nancy Pelosi was a happy accident for me.
I’m sure Chris Wallace and other boneheads on Fox News were also SHOCKED by the president’s tone as he told Nancy Pelosi what he really thinks of her, but there is something really special about watching the morally challenged Legion of Gloom at CNN snipe at the president for having the audacity to defend himself against the impeachment scam.
The first paragraph of President Trump’s six page letter set the tone — no surrender:
“I write to express my strongest and most powerful protest against the partisan impeachment crusade being pursued by the Democrats in the House of Representatives. This impeachment represents an unprecedented and unconstitutional abuse of power by Democrat Lawmakers, unequaled in nearly two and a half centuries of American legislative history.”
“By proceeding with your invalid impeachment, you are violating your oaths of office, you are breaking your allegiance to the Constitution, and you are declaring open war on American Democracy. You dare to invoke the Founding Fathers in pursuit of this election-nullification scheme — yet your spiteful actions display unfettered contempt for America’s founding and your egregious conduct threatens to destroy that which our Founders pledged their very lives to build.”
At the end of the third paragraph, the President makes it personal and calls out the hypocritical sanctimonious Pelosi for her crocodile tears and hand-wringing:
“Even worse than offending the Founding Fathers, you are offending Americans of faith by continually saying “I pray for the President,” when you know this statement is not true, unless it is meant in a negative sense. It is a terrible thing you are doing, but you will have to live with it, not I!”
That was too much for Baldwin and Borger! “HOW DARE HE!” they might as well have shouted, channeling their hero Greta Thunberg. They were really shocked that the president didn’t pay respect to Pelosi’s phony self-serving prayers.
Borger went further about how the letter was a hand grenade thrown in the laps of our sleepy senators:
“It points to some very serious issues. I mean this was written by the president of the United States, who clearly has difficulty exhibiting any kind of self-control whatsoever, and I think as senators read this letter and they are about to be the jurors … on the question of Ukraine and in a larger sense in this president’s fitness for office, I think you have to read this letter in that context.”
CNN’s Presidential Historian Jeffrey Engel said that the letter from Trump reminded him of President Andrew Johnson’s response to being impeached by a rogue Congress in 1868. Engel doesn’t seem to get the irony of the fact that Johnson was impeached for making fun of Congress. He muses that that might not be a high crime or misdemeanor, but he never gets the central point that ridiculing Congress is not only unimpeachable; it is right and proper — especially for a president like either Johnson or Trump who was harassed for personal not legitimate reasons. I wrote about The similarities between Trump and Johnson here. It’s worth a read.
Too bad Baldwin, Borger, Engel and the rest of the crew at CNN have no sense of irony — or reality. Like the Democrats themselves they are obsessed with destroying Trump and they can’t see that his letter is a magnificent defense of the Constitution and American Democracy. As the president wrote:
“You are the ones interfering in America’s elections. You are the ones subverting America’s Democracy. You are the ones Obstructing Justice. You are the ones bringing pain and suffering to our Republic for your own selfish personal, political, and partisan gain. …
“Any member of Congress who votes in support of impeachment—against every shred of truth, fact, evidence, and legal principle—is showing how deeply they revile the voters and how truly they detest America’s Constitutional order. Our Founders feared the tribalization of partisan politics, and you are bringing their worst fears to life.”
