GOP conservatives in the House Freedom Caucus finally took a look around them and noticed one “conservative” Republican in the House leadership was not like the rest of them.
It wasn’t that Liz Cheney, the representative from Wyoming is a woman. In fact, being a woman and thus checking a box for GOP identity politics, is the only conceivable reason why Cheney is the No. 3 Republican in the House.
Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, represents the failed policies of the GOP Elite who gave us two terms of globalist George Bush and the failed candidacies of John McCain and Mitt Romney. Like John Bolton, she never met a war she didn’t like.
The fact of the matter is that Cheney, the Republican Conference Chair, is out of step with the Republican Party of Donald Trump — and as many polls have proven, Donald Trump enjoys the overwhelming support of rank-and-file Republicans.
In “speaking her own mind,” she frequently criticizes Trump, playing into the hands of the radical left. As Donald Trump Jr. said, “We already have one Mitt Romney, we don’t need another.”
So finally this week some real conservatives told Cheney to get lost. The story was first reported by Politico:
“Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, a Freedom Caucus co-founder and one of Trump’s top allies, called out Cheney, the GOP conference chair, for all the times she has opposed Trump and began ticking off some recent high-profile examples, according to two sources in the room. While Jordan praised her defense of Trump during impeachment, he also said Cheney’s recent rebukes of Trump — which have focused on Trump’s handling of the coronavirus, his Twitter rhetoric, and his foreign policy — were not helpful.
“Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona, the head of the Freedom Caucus, even accused Cheney of undermining the GOP’s ability to win back the House and said that if someone has a problem with Trump, they should keep it to themselves.”
That wasn’t the end of it. After the meeting, several Republicans went public with their disdain for Cheney. Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida tweeted this:
“Liz Cheney has worked behind the scenes (and now in public) against @realDonaldTrump and his agenda. House Republicans deserve better as our Conference Chair. Liz Cheney should step down or be removed.”
Today, Sen. Rand Paul told CNN the criticism was justified:
“I think one of the good things about President Trump is he’s tried to end the war in Afghanistan after 20 years,” Paul said. “Liz Cheney was one of the main obstacles to ending the war. …
“I mean she tries to sabotage everything he tries to do in foreign policy, so I don’t know whether she’s a good advocate for the President or not.”
It’s unlikely that anything positive will result from this rebellion, because as always the GOP House leadership is on the side of the elites, not the conservatives.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, in the “fine” tradition of Paul Ryan and John Boehner, took the side of Cheney and against the crew that wants to re-elect Trump and restore the GOP majority in the House: “We’re honored to have her as conference chair,” he said.
Oh brother! Yeah, and we’re honored to slit our own throat too.
