With friends like these: The betrayal of Donald Trump

If every great hero has a tragic flaw, then Donald Trump’s must surely be unthinking loyalty.

Time and again, Trump has trusted those around him, only to be betrayed or disappointed. Adding to this is Trump’s willingness to forgive those who have betrayed him once, only to give them a chance to stick the knife in again.

Symbolic of that whole class of ingrates is Mitt Romney, whose presidential run Trump supported in 2012, but who then returned the favor in 2016 by publicly denouncing Trump as a con man. Rather than holding Romney at arm’s length after that, DJT considered him for secretary of state and later supported his run for the Senate from Utah. Romney, of course, repaid Trump’s loyalty by being the only Republican to vote to convict the president in his first impeachment trial.

Of course, now that the second impeachment trial is set to begin, Romney is being joined by other traitors who care more about their reputation with Democrats and DC elites than with the Deplorables.

I suppose Trump had no reason to expect loyalty from Rep. Liz Cheney, so her vote for impeachment can be written off as just one more disappointment from a RINO. But Sen. Mitch McConnell has every reason to be respectful and grateful to Trump, the first Republican President to fight for conservative principles since Ronald Reagan. Yet McConnell couldn’t run away from Trump fast enough. He worked with Vice President Pence to undermine Trump’s very reasonable argument that he had been cheated out of his re-election by an unconstitutional scheme hatched by Mark Zuckerberg, Stacy Abrams and a handful of top Democrats. Going into the impeachment vote, it’s not even clear whether McConnell will stick with our great president.

But McConnell is a creature of the swamp. His support was always transactional, but now we get to the “Et tu Brute” moment when Trump’s true allies turn against him. Sadly, that includes Sen. Ted Cruz, who had once said he would represent Trump’s case for fraud in the Supreme Court, but now can’t run away fast enough.

On Jan. 23, Cruz called the president’s claims of a “stolen” election “reckless and irresponsible” on his Verdict podcast.

“President Trump’s rhetoric, I think, went way too far over the line,” he said. “I think it was both reckless and irresponsible because he said repeatedly — and he said over and over again — he won by a landslide. There was massive fraud. It was all stolen everywhere. That evidence, the campaign did not prove that in any court. And to make a determination about an election, it has to be based on the evidence. And so simply saying the result you want, that’s not responsible, and you’ve never heard me use language like that.”

What? You sniveling coward!

Just last week, I had put Cruz in my Top Three candidates for 2024, but now I have to assume that Cruz has reverted to his self-centered egotist mode that he showed in 2016 after getting his butt kicked by DJT. This is truly disgraceful!

What President Trump needs and deserves is friends who will have his back. He’s got most of 74 million voters who supported him, but for some reason his advisers have spines of jello! I’m terrified of what his attorneys will do when they put on his defense! Can they have the backbone to argue that Trump was right-minded when he challenged the election results? Can they stand for the truth? Or will they surrender to Big Brother and ask for forgiveness?

Trump’s reputation is under assault by the communist left, and if his lawyers abandon him, then he needs to forget about his loyalty to them and instead remain loyal to principle. He needs to be loyal to us Deplorables and fight for right, not for mere acquittal but for vindication.

Fight for right!

  1. Thought Cruz had matured, but guess my first impressions were correct. He’s doesn’t have guts or moral courage for the long haul.

  2. Traitors! Politicians like these, FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith, journalist Bob Sellers – who to trust ????
Justice will have to come from the Deplorables!

  3. Yes very shocking to learn just who has refused to take a Stand for We the People; I am never going to vote again for Daines for these very reason, he also let the People of Montana down on January 6th

  4. Trump is human but the way he forgave people who double crossed him was more than human. My family misses him so much. For better or for worse, he told the truth. One of the “political bullet points” the media employed without proof consisted of calling President Trump a liar every time he spoke, yet Biden has told about 11 bald face lies at this point, and not one word from his accomplices who “cover up” his lies. Why can’t the Republicans chant “No one’s above the law” the way the Democrat strategists advised them to do wherever they found a microphone? No one is above the law but hunter, frank, James, and Joe apparently are above the law. Where’s Nancy? Can’t the judges stop Biden’s dictatorship? Because of his dictatorship we now have mass Pandemonium about to reach our borders because of biden’s campaign lies.

  5. Mr. Miele has taken Ted Cruz’ name off the top 3 of his 2024 list of presidential candidates, but obviously Ted Cruz has his own list and he made himself number one on top of his own Ted Cruz list! Romney still thinks he has a chance at being president because he is entitled and let’s not forget John Kerry whose return to our television screens has been revolting. He thinks he will take over once Joe goes to the special unit for dithering fools!!
Remember, John Kerry and Mitt are entitled. It’s their turn to be reimbursed for their public service for all the years they “served,” which means they have been feeding at the trough of the tax payers for over 40 years. Great gig – being in public service. Kerry will “swan” around Europe trying to get as many freebies for himself as he can and the Europeans will make him feel important while they laugh behind his back at his “gall” because he will let them know that he is entitled. He carried on all over the world – his own words for why he used his private jet – behind President Trump’s back, acting with Iran and he should be called out for abusing the Logan Act. The Republicans have no spine. Kerry as the Climate envoy? It’s 25 degrees in Bedminster, NJ, and we have 36 inches of snow. Global warming?? Is this “Take a Has-Been Bloviator to work” day? He’s really in the John Edwards class of vain people. Birds of a feather.
