Democrats think of President Trump the same way they thought of Abraham Lincoln — as a dangerous demagogue who will divide the country.
Just listen to the rhetoric used by the left about Trump’s historic speech at Mount Rushmore on July 3.
The New York Times called it “dark and divisive.” CNN says it was “jaw-dropping.” Esquire magazine called it “terrifyingly bonkers.”
What terrifies them all is that this is the beginning of President Trump fighting back against the modern-day secessionists who want to withdraw from “one nation under god, indivisible” and create an entirely new nation antithetical to the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Even worse than the secessionists of the Civil War, these new rebels want to take the entire country with them into their oppressive regime.
Well, I think Trump is like Lincoln, too — the Lincoln who fought to save our nation. Trump like Lincoln is telling the rebels: “Not so fast.”
In his speech Friday night, the president officially threw down the gauntlet and declared that the union will stand, our monuments will stand, our statues will stand, and our people will stand UNITED against those who want to tear us down.
After a few introductory words about 1776, the president made it clear where HE stands:
“… as we meet here tonight, there is a growing danger that threatens every blessing our ancestors fought so hard for, struggled, they bled to secure. Our nation is witnessing a merciless campaign to wipe out our history, defame our heroes, erase our values, and indoctrinate our children.”
When he talked about “indoctrinating our children” it was obvious that Trump was ready to take on the radical left, which has been waging a covert war against the Constitution for a hundred years. Maybe patriots will one day be glad that the socialists have this year decided to come into the light because now it is very clear that they intend to destroy this country. Lines are being drawn, and sides are being picked. We are lucky to have Trump as president now because we know that he will not go down without a fight.
“Angry mobs are trying to tear down statues of our Founders, deface our most sacred memorials, and unleash a wave of violent crime in our cities. Many of these people have no idea why they are doing this, but some know exactly what they are doing. They think the American people are weak and soft and submissive. But no, the American people are strong and proud, and they will not allow our country, and all of its values, history, and culture, to be taken from them.”
“One of their political weapons is âCancel Cultureâ â driving people from their jobs, shaming dissenters, and demanding total submission from anyone who disagrees. This is the very definition of totalitarianism, and it is completely alien to our culture and our values, and it has absolutely no place in the United States of America. This attack on our liberty, our magnificent liberty, must be stopped, and it will be stopped very quickly. We will expose this dangerous movement, protect our nationâs children, end this radical assault, and preserve our beloved American way of life.
“In our schools, our newsrooms, even our corporate boardrooms, there is a new far-left fascism that demands absolute allegiance. If you do not speak its language, perform its rituals, recite its mantras, and follow its commandments, then you will be censored, banished, blacklisted, persecuted, and punished. Itâs not going to happen to us.
“Make no mistake: this left-wing cultural revolution is designed to overthrow the American Revolution. In so doing, they would destroy the very civilization that rescued billions from poverty, disease, violence, and hunger, and that lifted humanity to new heights of achievement, discovery, and progress.
“To make this possible, they are determined to tear down every statue, symbol, and memory of our national heritage.”
These may be the most important words uttered by any president since Lincoln’s Gettysburg address. We are still testing, in Lincoln’s words, whether any nation “conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal” can long endure.
And like Lincoln honoring the war dead of the Battle of Gettysburg, so too is Trump honoring them and all the other heroes who dedicated their lives to creating and preserving the Union. As surely as Lincoln, Trump is declaring “that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
