Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., is to be congratulated for using his chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee to shed light on issues of national security that other Republicans want to run away from.
It is largely thanks to Johnson and fellow Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley that the American public has learned details of Joe Biden’s son Hunter’s foreign business deals in China, Russia and the Ukraine.
Today, Johnson is holding a hearing on election fraud to hear from witnesses on how to assess claims of cheating in the presidential election.
One of the first witnesses was Christopher Krebs, the Homeland Security employee fired by President Trump after he said the 2020 election was the “most secure in U.S. history.” When Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., was questioning Krebs he said that the committee’s investigation of fraud was itself “an assault on democracy.”
This was too much for Sen. Johnson, who took the opportunity to set the record straight about the importance of the committee’s investigation into Hunter Biden.
“I just have to talk about Russian disinformation — because people peddling it are not on my side of the aisle,” Johnson began. “Senior Democrat leaders including ranking member Peters were involved in a process of creating a false intelligence product … they leaked to the media that accused Sen. Grassley … and myself of accepting and disseminating Russian disinformation.”
“Ranking member Peters accusing Sen. Grassley and I of disseminating Russian disinformation, that’s where the disinformation is coming. That’s where the false information, the lies, the false allegations [is coming from] and I can’t sit by here and listen to this.”
When Peters objected to the criticism, he really ticked off Johnson, who replied:
“You lied repeatedly in the press that I was spreading Russian disinformation, and that was an outright lie, and I told you to stop lying, and you continued to do it!”
Way to go, Sen. Johnson! If only other Republicans would speak up and defend themselves and President Trump against Democrat lies, maybe the republic would not be at risk today.
