I haven’t been posting much during the coronavirus slowdown because there just hasn’t been much worth saying.
Personally, I’ve been bored to tears listening to endless reporting on the same limited topics, but I finally was inspired to comment on a glimmer of good news out of Georgia.
No, Gov. Brian Kemp hasn’t been replaced by a real Republican (see here), but rather a real Democrat has had the temerity to call bullshit on his own party and to endorse President Trump for re-election. This is a real “man bites dog” story!
State Rep. Vernon Jones announced last week that he was endorsing Trump. “It’s very simple to me,” Jones told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “President Trump’s handling of the economy, his support for historically black colleges and his criminal justice initiatives drew me to endorse his campaign.
“There are a lot of African Americans who clearly see and appreciate he’s doing something that’s never been done before. When you look at the unemployment rates among black Americans before the pandemic, they were at historic lows. That’s just a fact.”
You can imagine the outrage from Georgia Democrats over this announcement. In fact, they made Jones so uncomfortable that he announced Wednesday that he would neither seek reelection to the Georgia legislature this year nor serve out the remainder of his term.
In a statement announcing his resignation, Jones said the decision resulted because of attacks he and his family were receiving since backing Trump.
“I’m sick and tired of me and my family being attacked and harassed by the Democrat Party for putting my country before my party,” Jones said. “I take pride in being an independent thinker.”
Jones used some great rhetoric in his announcement, which makes me sad that he intends for now to remain a Democrat. The Republicans could definitely use him to counter the RINOs like Gov. Kemp. Here’s a sample:
“I endorsed the White guy (Donald J. Trump) that let Blacks out of jail, and they endorsed the White guy (Joe Biden) that put Blacks in jail. Turn the lights off, I have left the plantation.”
Hopefully, Jones will get a prime-time speaking role at the GOP convention later this year!
